Streaker Northern Championship/Welton SC Streaker Open

Saturday 20th May saw a record 30 Streakers competing in the Welton SC Streaker Open, which also was this year’s Northern Championship.  Despite grey skies and constant rain, wind conditions were ideal, with a steady force 3 for the first race, slowly rising to a 4/5 for the final contest.

Race1 saw half the fleet over the line at the start, causing race office Pete Fletcher to issue a general recall – and raise the black flag, which resulted in good behaviour for the re-start.  Current Northern and National Champion Ian Jones of Dovestone SC led the pack almost from the start, and quickly stretched out his advantage, being 150 yards ahead after the first lap, and eventually finishing a massive 2 ˝ minutes in front.

The next half-dozen places were especially keenly contested, with local helm Mark Hill holding on to 2nd place for the first half of the race before eventually finishing fourth.

After a magnificent three course lunch – which saw the galley crew donning specially commissioned T-shirts featuring pictures of assorted (male, naked) Streakers – the second race got off to a clean start, although a bunch of the local boats pushed each other around the starboard end of the line, causing them to start a fair way behind.  Again, Ian Jones led from the start, and continually extended his lead, with the next hand-full of places constantly changing until Tamworth SC visitor John Burgoine broke free from the group on the second lap.

During the break for tea and cake, the wind freshened considerably, and only 23 boats ventured out for the last race – which saw some exciting gybes, and a number of capsizes, including a spectacular death roll.  Once again, Ian Jones took the lead early on, despite a slightly less perfect start.  In second place for the first lap was Ripon helm Jonathan Chappel, who unfortunately took the wrong course on lap 2, and then sportingly sailed an extra circuit to finish last.

Results overall were tight in places, with countback necessary to determine the final positions.  Some competitors found the slightly weedy conditions trying, but everyone finished the day tired but happy, and the host club were particularly pleased to place four helms in the top ten positions.

Grateful thanks are extended for the excellent services of the race officers, safety boat crews, and particularly the galley crew for their excellent standard of catering.
