Saturday 20th May saw a record 30 Streakers competing in the Welton SC Streaker Open, also was this year’s Northern Championship. Despite grey skies and constant rain, wind condition was a steady force 3 for the first race, rising to a 4/5.
Race1 saw half the fleet over the line, causing a general recall – and the black flag, which resulted in good behaviour for the re-start. National Champion Ian Jones led almost from the start, and finished a massive 2 ½ minutes in front. The next half-dozen places were keenly contested, with local helm Mark Hill holding on to 2nd place for the first half before finishing fourth.
After lunch – which saw the galley crew donning specially commissioned T-shirts featuring pictures of assorted (male, naked) Streakers – the second race got off to a clean start, although a bunch of the local boats pushed each other around the starboard end of the line, leaving them a fair way behind. Again, Jones led from the start, with the next hand-full of places constantly changing until John Burgoine broke free on the second lap.
Only 23 boats ventured out for the last race – which saw some exciting gybes, and several capsizes, including a spectacular death roll. Jones took an early lead, with Jonathan Chappel in second place for the first lap, who unfortunately then took the wrong course, but sportingly sailed an extra circuit to finish last.
