Handicap System
Most of our racing is organised
on a Handicap basis. All Handicapping is based on the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick
(P.Y.) system. Welton SC uses local Handicap variations as recommended by the
RYA. The handicaps we use are Listed Below.
The Handicap for each class is reviewed at the start of each season and is
adjusted on the basis of the actual club results over the last 5 years.
We also operate a Personal
Handicap Race series. At the start of each season, all competitors are
allocated a Personal Handicap. This is calculated from their results in the
previous season. The system operates identically to the Standard RYA P.Y.
system except that it is each helm that is allocated a yardstick, and not the
class of boat. In theory, this gives everybody an equal chance of winning the
series. In essence, it is the person who maintains the greatest improvement
compared to their results last year that will win the series. This tends to
favour the weaker sailors as they have the greatest potential to improve and
tries to ensures that the Club Champion does not walk away with every trophy at the end
of the season.
The Personal Handicap under which
each person races is based on the performance of that sailor in the previous
season. New members will initially sail off the Class Handicap and once they have
completed a number of races a provisional personal yardstick will be issued.
